Journaling Through Growth: Reflecting on Grace and Grit

View the Bible Reading Plan for this Month: June

Growth in Christ is both a gift and a journey. It is cultivated through seasons of grace and strengthened through seasons that demand grit. These prompts are designed to help you reflect deeply on what it means to grow—with both tenderness and tenacity—while walking in step with the Holy Spirit. Each group of prompts draws from the themes in the two devotionals: one exploring Rooted to Rise: Growing with Grace and Grit and the other When Growth Is the Sign of Life. Use them prayerfully, as conversation starters between you and God.

Reflecting on Growing with Grace and Grit

  1. Think about a time when your faith was tested. How did grace sustain you when your strength ran out?

  2. What does “spiritual grit” look like in your current season of life? How are you learning to endure with faith?

  3. Reflect on an area where you once tried to grow through self-effort. What changed when you allowed God’s grace to lead instead?

  4. How has God used difficulty to deepen your dependence on Him?

  5. Where have you seen grace and grit working together—helping you stand, serve, and keep growing even when progress was slow?

  6. What does abiding in Christ look like for you right now? How are you nurturing your spiritual roots daily?

  7. Identify one area of life where you sense God calling you to surrender control. What might it look like to let grace carry you there?

  8. How can you balance divine grace and personal discipline in your spiritual walk?

  9. Write about a moment when you almost gave up but decided to keep going. What did you learn about God’s faithfulness through that experience?

  10. How does the idea of “grace and grit” challenge or affirm your understanding of what spiritual maturity looks like?

Reflecting on Growth as the Sign of Life

  1. In what ways can you recognize the evidence of growth in your spiritual life over the past year?

  2. How do you respond when growth feels slow or invisible? What truth from Scripture helps you stay encouraged during those times?

  3. Write about a “hidden season” in your life—one where you did not see fruit but later realized God was growing your faith beneath the surface.

  4. What does spiritual health mean to you? How can you check in with your soul more intentionally?

  5. Consider something God has recently pruned from your life. What fruit might He be preparing to produce through that pruning?

  6. When have you experienced the grace of transformation—where God changed your reactions, attitudes, or desires without you forcing it?

  7. How can you become more aware of the small ways God’s grace is shaping you each day?

  8. What role does patience play in your growth? How is God teaching you to trust His timing?

  9. Reflect on J. C. Ryle’s statement: “When there is no growth, there is something wrong.” What areas of your spiritual life might need renewed attention or care?

  10. If your soul were a garden, what parts would be flourishing, and what parts might need more light, pruning, or water from God’s Word?

Closing Thought:

Growth is not measured by speed but by surrender. Every step, every root, every small stretch toward God is evidence of life within you. As you journal through these questions, let grace speak louder than pressure, and let grit remind you that even when growth is slow—it is still growth.
